CT's excels in doing simple things superbly (ordinary cabbage, for example, that becomes amazingly tasty after being sautéed with a few aromatics and the ubiquitous Szechuan peppers). For the admirer of tripe, for example, this represents a bonanza. At dinner, the choices expand considerably with a variety of rare (in most American Chinese places) ingredients, principally offal. At lunch, CTs features reasonably priced (ca $9) specials that are organized by taste (e.g., cumin flavored) or principal flavor ingredient (e.g., scallion or onion) that can be ordered with one's desired main element (lamb, beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, or, in my case, a real favorite: eggplant, in the wood ear and garlic combination). CT's earns this distinction with well-prepared and handsomely presented dishes from diverse Chinese culinary traditions, all in a smart setting, overseen by a knowledgeable and friendly wait. The meal I received had none of the spiciness and flavors I expected. Sichuan Cuisine is a spicy, robust cuisine. The chicken I ordered was supposed to be hot. The Dan Dan Noodles somehow morphed into a sesame paste and hot oi concoction, a most unpleasant combination. The food at that place was uniformly good and I considered the food to be authentic, 'a benchmark'. A placard in the lobby of that place stated, 'we are the official caterers to the Chinese Embassy'. The other diner was a vegetarian and was able to order a meal from the menu with modifications. No sooner had we received our menus then they were asking if we were ready to order. The wait staff might be a tad too attentive. The menu is attractive and well organized. Even though crowded, this place is large and the wait staff found us a table in a good location. my lunch partner and I are the only occidentals in a crowded restaurant. High ceilings, open and airy, this place is well designed. WOW! Walking into this newly opened branch of this restaurant at 558 Washington Blvd., Jersey City, NJ, 07310, one is immediately struck by how attractive the physical resturant is. If our first experience here repeats on our next visit, this Restaurant will surely become our new favorite casual Chinese “Go-To” places near our home. Wow – the peppery, hot and sweet flavors were memorable on our palates.Īll the servers were polite, friendly and professional, especially Johnny, who made valuable suggestions regarding the dishes from the Menu. For Dessert, we got the Fried Pumpkin Cookies. The combination of Fried Chicken Chongqing Style, Kung Pao Chicken, Garlic with Lettuce and Spicy Fish Tripe Hunan Style was absolutely perfect after the Hot Tea and Vegetable Spring Rolls for Appetizer. The spices were ample in the spicy foods, and just right in the moderately spicy dishes. Taking some suggestions from our server, we ordered a few dishes, and every single one was authentic and delicious. Their Menu was large with a variety of selections from the Sichuan and Hunan provinces. In spite of this, they seat families on alternate tables maintaining perfect social distancing and pandemic protocols. We found that the servers all wear masks, and the tables are spaced apart. We have passed this Restaurant several times, and finally decided to come in after. ![]()
